More information on the artist :
Russian born, Luba Sterlikova currently resides in the US and
is known to the artistic community as LUBA. Both Russian and
American influences can be traed in her work, as the Eastern vivid
colors blend symbiotically with more Western shapes and structure.
The artist’s interest goes beyond stylizing natural forms. Rather,
Luba explores shape and color to evoke in each composition an
expression that is both provocative and poignant. Characterized as
intense and exotic, Luba’s floral compositions strike a
balance between the bold and the graceful; they are simultaneously
intense and delicate.
Luba is active on the Washington , DC art scene, and for many

artistic community as LUBA.
Both Russian and American influences can be traed in her work, as
the Eastern vivid colors blend symbiotically with more Western

Her work is often compared to that of American icon Georgia O’Keefe,
but Luba’s passionate approach is undeniably her own.
Keshav Malik, Indian art critic, called Luba’s work a juicy genre,
as rich as Keats, the poet’s fruity poems.
The artist’s interest goes beyond stylizing natural forms. Rather,
Luba explores shape and color to evoke in each composition an

100th Anniversary of the Parliamentarism in Russia
In April and May 2006 the Russian Cultural Centre presents a series of
events dedicated to the 100-th Anniversary of Parliamentarism in Russia.
Currently we host an Exhibition “ The History of the First Russian Duma in
photos and documents” It has abstracts from the Tzar’s Nikolay the Second
diary where he writes an order to announce the first parliamentary
elections in Russia, the Tzar’s Manifesto welcoming the election of the
First Duma and then dated just a little more than a year after the Tzar’s
decision to dissolve the Parliament. Visitors of the Exhibition can see by
the documents presented how hard were the first steps towards
parliamentarism in Russia as well as the pictures of those who were the
explorers on that difficult way.
The great highlight of the opening ceremony of the Exhibition in the
Russian Cultural Centre was the presentation made by Kirill Muromtsev – a
grand son on the Chairman of the First Russian Duma Sergey Andreevich
Muromtsev. He told the story of his great ancestor :
“In 1904-1905 Sergey Andreevich Muromtsev became one of the founders of
the constitution-democratic party and after that the Chairman of the First
State Duma in Russia. He was the author of the “Basic Law” – a document he
wanted to present to the Parliament and the Tzar as a draft of the Russian
Constitution. After the First Duma was dissolved Segrey Muromtsev was
“repressed” by the Tzar Nikolay the Second. Muromtsev was one of the
authors of “Vyborg Appeal” which called to the mass actions of protest.
For that he was thrown to prison,” – said Kirill Muromtsev.
The Exhibition Dedicated to the 100-th Anniversary of Parliamentarism in
Russia will be open in the Russian Cultural Centre till the end of May.

whole country, to analyze the University’s special spiritual atmosphere in
the Past and at Present times. The Exhibition presented to the public a
book series “Famous Alumni Golden Book of Saint Petersburg University”.
Each of the 3 volumes includes 30 biographies. Among them are the famous
figures in the History of Russia, including poet Alexander Blok, prominent
biologist Ivan Pavlov, the inventor of a radio transmitter Alexander
Popov, painter Mikhail Vrubel, founder-director of the Ballets Russes
Sergey Diaghilev, as well as high rank politicians of the modern Russia

Spirit of the Elbe
River : Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery
On
April 25, 1945 Soviet and US forces linked up near Torgau, Germany, on the
Elbe river. The 61-st anniversary of that history-making event was marked
on April 25, 2006 on the Arlington National Cemetery near Washington by
the ceremony of laying wreaths at the Spirit of Elbe memorial. This
ceremony involved Russia's Ambassador to the United States Yury Ushakov,
heads of other CIS countries' diplomatic missions, representatives of the
Russian Cultural Centre as well as Soviet and US veterans, who had fought
in the Second World War.
The historic Elbe link-up involved advanced units of the 58-th
Guards rifle division serving with the First Ukrainian front's Fifth
Guards Army and the First US Army's 69-th infantry division. Among the
participants at the ceremony on the Arlington Cemetery was Igor
Belousovich, son of Russian immigrants to the US who was actually in one
of the 3 American scout units who made a contact with the Soviet troops on
April, 25 1945.
Soviet and US soldiers joined hands 61 years ago, that is, on April
25, 1945. They stood on a damaged bridge spanning the Elbe river near
Torgau. That photo became a well-known symbol of the end of WWII. The
current anniversary is a good pretext for remembering the past and looking
into the future.
The ceremony held at the Arlington ceremony reminds us today that
our two countries fought against Nazi Germany in the Second World War. The
Russian Cultural Centre plans a variety of events in April and May to
commemorate this very important date in the history of our two nations.
Yuri’s Night 06

JANUARY -
FEBRUARY
Currently on Exhibit
On February the
17th the Russian Cultural Center hosted the opening ceremony for the
Exhibition from Moscow dedicated to the 71st Anniversary of the Roerich
Pact. It’s a collection of
historical documents from the Moscow Roerich Museum and copies of
paintings by Nicholas Roerich. The representative of the Roerich Museum,
Counsellor Gennady Zhizhin made a presentations to our guests. He told
about the History of the Roerich Pact, its legacy and importance for Peace
movement. A documentary on the history of the Roerich Pact “Time to gather
Stones” was also presented to our guests.
The Roerich Peace Pact was signed in Washington in 1935 by the US and 20
Latin American countries. Other countries, including Soviet Union, added
their signatures in 1959. At that time Nicholas Roerich introduced the
ancient symbol for protection of culture – the Banner of Peace. It
consists of three red marks in the circles which symbolize the unity of
Science, Culture and Religion. The flag became a symbol of commitment to
the protection of historical, cultural or scientifically significant
monuments.
The exhibition also features a great collection of Nicholas Roerich’s
paintings. It includes the first Western paintings of Tibet and central
Asia as well as the master’s mystical works.
